Best 2011 Frames - Every 2011 is a wide/double stack 1911, but not every 1911 is a wide/double stack 2011. Although the term is colloquially used to refer to any double stack 1911, they just aren't.
The 2011 frame was invented by the founders of STI, now a company called Staccato…but it’s not the only widebody 1911 frame to use a double-stack magazine.

So let's talk about what 2011 really is. We'll go over what's so great about them, as well as some pitfalls you should be aware of. While it's an amazing weapon, it may not be for everyone.

The 2011/double-stack 1911 was designed to retain the positive features of the 1911 (trigger, ergonomics, etc.) while increasing capacity. The first examples appeared in the early 1990s.
The idea came mostly from IPSC and USPSA shooters who wanted a higher capacity pistol that wasn't a DA/SA pistol, and - at the time - Glocks weren't considered the most competitive option.
The creation of double-stack rifles also helped open up the Open and Restricted divisions in sports still dominated by wide-body pistols/2011.
Although today's shooters generally prefer 9mm, early wide-barreled guns were much more common in .38 Super (and sometimes .40 S&V) to achieve the Major Power Factor, giving them a high-capacity advantage over shooters equipped with .45 ACP rifles.

Many of today's open class shooters use the .38 Super video frame with comp for the same reason.
The first double-stack 1911s and the current 2011s appeared in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ultimately, all pistols of this type come down to two basic designs that both do the same thing.
The trick is to design a magazine that tapers from the bottom twice the width of the wheel to the top, and build a frame that can use it. The upper end of the gun (slide, barrel, trigger components) is the same, but the base is slightly different.
The first to appear, according to The American Rifleman, was Para Ordnance's 14.45 frame design, which was in production until late 1989.

The Para design is a sturdy frame with a wider magazine well. Soon after, Caspian designed a replica. Para Ordnance, later ParaUSA, is long gone, but Caspian still makes double stack frames.
What we now call the 2011 is the pistol of Virgil Tripp (ever heard of Tripp Research 1911 magazines? Same guy) and Sandy Streer. With the help of Chip McCormick (also a big name in the 1911 magazines and world champion shooter), they developed a different frame system.
It was originally sold through McCormick's company (CMC Products), but Tripp and Strayer soon after formed Strayer Tripp International - STI - to make frames and custom rifles for them.

The Para, Caspian and CMC (later STI) frame systems were commercially available until 1993. At first they were custom action options; you made a gun that was made wide instead of just going to a gun store to buy it and they were usually priced.
The 2011 uses a frame system developed by Tripp and Straier with a modular polymer grip module and STI magazine design.
The 2011 was not originally sold or marketed as "2011" until it had been in production for some time; STI renamed the gun "2011" and the name (which is catchy) stuck. Much of the shooting community colloquially refers to every dual year 1911 as “2011.
STI has since been rebranded as Staccato and their firearms have been modified to broaden their appeal beyond competitive shooters.

The patent has since expired, allowing others to copy and reproduce it, as double-stack pistols from Nighthawk, BUL Armory, and others use the 2011 frame system.
When the STI - later Staccato - was created along with the 2011 frame system, the frame was made for custom builds whose customers needed a custom gun.
In fact, it used to be that you had to factory tune your gun's magazines in order for them to work reliably. If you bought new ones, you need to set them up as well.
The 2011 pistols are what you would call "semi-custom" in that the pistols require a bit of hand-fitting to build, but are built in standard configurations with barrel lengths, parts, and so on.

Like other semi-custom 1911s like the Wilson Combat, Les Baer, or Ed Brown, all the small parts are made from billets instead of MIM or castings like most mass market 1911s. Clearances and tolerances are also getting tighter.
Some other double-barrel 1911s are also semi- or fully custom, and some are mass-market rifles, such as those made by Springfield Armory, Colt, Remington, and others.
Mass market pistols are notorious for not holding up to work or other hard use due to breaking parts and other issues. Staccato pistols are primarily made for competition and work use.
The structure of the frame (and thus the load-bearing capacity) and the manufacturing methods set Staccato apart from others. Features like ambi safes, rail and serrations are different from other pistols but are basically cosmetic.

2011 is basically the Porsche Turbo of the gun world. It's built to a higher standard with performance and reliability as its primary purpose rather than matching the price and hopefully some performance. However, like any racing car, it requires a little more care than a typical car, and premium gas (quality ammo) and premium tires (earths are expensive!) will give you better results.
Is it worth the premium? Well, it depends on what you want to get out of it. Regardless, the Staccato is one of the most powerful and certainly one of the best pistols you can buy right now. STI is one of the more interesting gun companies out there and has a good reputation for custom and semi-custom guns, but I don't think they get all the credit they deserve. The 2011 model represents one of the most significant innovations in pistol design of the modern era, and its frames are the gold of custom guns. Still, most shooters—even people who use an STI or a custom gun built on an STI frame—can't tell you what makes the STI special.
They may go so far as to claim they are high-capacity 1911-style guns that can reliably fire cartridges other than .45 ACP. And it's true. You get the STI in 9mm, .38 Super, .40 S&V, 10mm, and .45 ACP – all of which work well in the 1911 geometry of the pistol.
But the STI's real magic is its modular design. Unlike other high-capacity double-stack 1911s, the STI has a frame that consists of two main components. The dust cover and frame rails are steel, but the lower part of the frame – the grip, magazine and trigger guard – is made of reinforced polymer with steel parts. Because this polymer part is one piece, it is both thinner and lighter than a traditional steel frame.

Despite the loss of frame weight, the 2011 still balances well in the hand due to the fact that a high-capacity magazine loaded with 20 or more rounds of 9mm is quite heavy. (Loaded with 21 rounds, my magazines weigh 13 ounces.)
The end product is a pistol that benefits from the excellent ergonomics of the 1911 and is reliable, accurate and capable of reducing the area between loads.
The Hek Tactical is technically one of STI's custom pistols because it was built to my specifications. But the company decided to offer it as one of its standard products with a few minor changes.

Features that make the Hek Tactical race-ready include excellent controls and hardware. The mag release button extends 0.172 inches from the frame compared to 0.1 inch on a standard 1911 mag release. This extra piece makes it easier to find and press while running and shooting. Reloading the STI is almost effortless, as the conical tip of the bullet finds its way into the well-expanded magazine well. As a shooting friend of mine says, "It's like throwing a hotdog in the hallway."
A two-handed safety is a must-have feature for a left-handed shooter. Although ambi safeties were common in 1911s, they often do not work well, either because they are not installed correctly or because the safety itself has too much flex. They can often get stuck and are difficult to handle once the gun is gripped
