FORT WAINWRIGHT, Alaska - This time of year is a great opportunity to take advantage of the outdoors because most mosquitoes are gone. It's also a good time to start trying to figure out where to put all that summer activity paraphernalia and make room in the garage for vehicles. But with colder mornings and September on the calendar, winter is just around the corner.

Summer season gear gets a break for the winter, but the primary mode of transportation, whether it's a car, truck, or minivan, doesn't get a break. It's time to give that vehicle the attention it deserves before the temperatures drop and the roads turn cold.

Living here in the interior, relying on a vehicle to function in the winter as well as in the summer is not an option. Cold, the kind of 50-below cold we no doubt experience, takes its toll on every part of a vehicle, especially if it's used daily.

Preparing a vehicle for the winter starts with checking the basic starting ability, so the condition of the battery is checked. If the battery was not so good in the summer, it will most likely fail in the winter. Along with a battery in good condition is the need to keep it protected. A heater (pad or blanket) to install heat or a trick charger to keep the battery charged when plugged in will result in a well-maintained, charged battery that won't freeze.

One of the most important winterization steps, according to the Fort Wainwright Center for Automotive Skills, is to prevent the various engine lubricants from freezing by connecting heating pads and block heaters.

In extremely cold temperatures, the oil tends to acquire the viscosity of honey in the refrigerator. Therefore, when you start a "cold" vehicle, the transmission fluids and engine oils are weak and thick, and settle in the lower levels of the engine: the transmission and the oil pan.

Oil and transmission pans may have silicone heating pads attached directly to them to keep them warm and fluid for proper circulation. Changing your engine oil to a lighter weight will also help keep your engine protected.

Block heaters or frozen plug heaters are heating elements that actually attach to the side of the engine. These combined winterization steps keep engine fluids and lubricants ready for cold weather driving, but do not prevent the vehicle's cooling system from freezing.

Interior car experts recommend checking the antifreeze to make sure it is rated between 50 and 60 below. The antifreeze mixture would be 65 percent antifreeze to 35 percent water.

The condition of the tires is very important, as icy and snow-covered roads are the norm. Check the traction of the tires and remember that in winter tires need additional air due to colder temperatures.
