You will most likely fly through Fairbanks International Airport in Fairbanks, which is the closest airport to Fort Wainwright. Taxis and other ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber are available from the airport in Fort Wainwright. You can also travel by rental car or bus.
All postal drivers must have a valid military ID, veteran or retiree ID, valid driver's license and valid driver's insurance card. Visitors without official US government ID must enter through the Visitor Center. To get a visitor badge, you will need photo identification, vehicle registration and the building number of your destination at the visitor center.
Military personnel checking in for processing at Fort Wainwright must check in at the Welcome Center in Building 3401. During business hours and after holidays, report to Building 3419 or call 1 (907) 353-4311 for instructions.
When you arrive at the airport, call 1 (907) 353-4311 for further details. If a military member chooses to take a taxi from the airport, the finance department will reimburse all applicable travel expenses during the process. Military life is hard. Fairbanks, Alaska (KTVF) - Beginning June 2, Fort Wainwright's (FTW) main gate will be closed for repairs and improvements. Additional gates to enter and exit the post office will be open during the closure and there will be additional times at existing gates.
Fort Wainwright Physical Security Officer Jason Millett said: To improve visitor center parking.”
While the base is closed, FTW will open a temporary gate on Lazelle Road at the intersection of Johansen Highway and Steese Highway. Millett says Coach Gate remains open. From 5:30 to 20:00 the gates are open for traffic in both directions. The rest of the time it serves only as an outlet.

Millett said people should not try to make the Coach Gate the main entrance to the post. "The coaches are already full, so it's very important to understand that when the [main] gate closes, the Lazelle gate will get them there faster and faster."
There is a temporary visitor center at Lazelle Gate and it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Gateways are gateways only. Badger Road Gate is also open 24 hours.
Temporary gates for those leaving the base will be open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for right turns only on Richardson Highway.
Millett said there will be delays. "Expect a delay of around 2-3 minutes and depending on rush hour it may take longer to get your pass." He said those trying to board the base should plan for extra time.
