Snowbirds and cold weather fans - look forward to your new assignment at Fort Wainwright. This Northern Army post is located next to Fairbanks, Alaska, one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Alaska is the northern war training center and Cold Region test center. Wainwright's strategic location makes it an important national asset and global power projection platform. The senior command of this post is the 11th Airborne Division.

PCS to Alaska is considered an OCONUS duty move, so your PCS pattern will be different from previous moves. Make sure you attend all debriefing sessions during your missed installation so you know what to expect. The cost of living in Alaska is high. Financial preparation will be the key to having a successful experience in this northern state. Family members must be listed on official orders to accompany soldiers to Alaska. In addition, all family members must complete the EFMP screening.

Fort Wainwright is located in interior Alaska, between the Alaska Range to the south and the Brooks Range to the north. Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska and is approximately 350 miles from the state capital, Anchorage. Much of the state is still desert, which is one reason things like this shipwreck are being discovered.

Families Join Fort Wainwright Soldiers For Range Day

The most efficient and convenient way to get to the airport is by plane. Plan your arrival at Fairbanks Airport. Your sponsor should meet you at the airport to help you get back to the post office. You can also reach the Anchorage Airport.

From Fairbanks International Airport - take the ramp to S Fairbanks and then go to AK-3 N / Robert Mitchell Expy. Bear left at the fork, follow signs for AK-2 N / Fort Wainwright and follow AK-2 W. Then turn right onto Airport Way / Gaffney Rd. At the roundabout continue straight to stay on Airport Way / Gaffney Rd.

From Anchorage - Go North on I Street to W 4th Ave. Then turn right at Intersection 1 onto W 4th Street. Then turn right at Junction 1 onto H Street. -1 N/E 5th Ave. Then go straight on AK-3 N. Take a left at the fork, follow the signs to AK-2 N / Fort Wainwright and go on AK-2 W.

If you plan to use the Alaska Marine Highway System, please contact the Office of Transportation for more information. The ship goes to Bellingham, Washington and goes to Haines, Alaska. The shipping route from Haines is long - about 660 miles away. To do this trip, you have to travel from Alaska to Canada and back again. Plan ahead for gas stops, rest stops and lodging. Be prepared for minor auto repairs. There can be long stretches without stopping along the way. A pass is required, so plan ahead.

The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) offers free shuttle service through the post office. This service is for soldiers and families.

If you are planning to ship your vehicle and you are on a summer PCS cycle, ship it ASAP! If the vehicle is to be imported between October and April, it must have frost protection down to -60°F. You will also want to dispose of old batteries. Contact the relocation office for more information.

On June 6, 2015, volunteers FD Stace and VFD Chena Goldstream, both part of the Fairbanks North Star Fire District, joined the Fort Wainwright Fire Department's medical evacuation lift training with Company C, 1st Battalion, 52nd. Aviation Regiment (Air Ambulance).

Like many DoD installations, Ft. Wainwright's mission is simple. Deploy combat-ready forces to support joint military operations around the world. This post also serves as command of the ground components of the joint force. It helps support Joint Task Force Alaska.

In 1939, the War Department established Led Field as a cold-weather station for aircraft testing in arctic conditions. Then in 1961 his property was handed over to the army. Redesignated as Wainwright in honor of General Jonathan M. Wainwright. General Wainwright received the Medal of Honor for his leadership in the Philippines during World War II.

More Than 2,000 Fort Wainwright Soldiers To Deploy To Iraq

From 1986 to 1994, Ft. Wainwright was home to the 6th Infantry Division (Light) and served as the division's headquarters.

As part of the Army's plan to create six Stryker brigade combat teams, the 172nd Infantry Brigade was reorganized to be an SBCT. Then in 2006, the 172nd was re-flagshipped as the 1st Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division. In the same year, the 4/123rd Aviation Battalion was inactivated and redesignated as the 49th Task Force Aviation Brigade.

When you PCS to Alaska, it's not all cold weather activities. In fact, there is plenty to do in the warmer months!

Hotels are hard to come by and are usually booked in advance. If you are interested in staying at the hotel, call in advance.

The Last Frontier does not disappoint foodies and picky eaters. From incredibly fresh seafood to locally caught game, there is something for everyone. You'll definitely want to try moose and bear, and Alaska is also known for its salmon and halibut. You'll also want to try the reindeer sausage. It's a summer staple in the state and no picnic is complete without it! Be sure to try Moktok. It is made from whale kernels and tastes like coconut. In addition, don't miss the Eskimo ice cream. It is called akutak and is made of fat, snow and berries.

In the post you will find the usual activities - bowling, fitness center, golf, and cinema. But when it's time to spread your wings and get outside, Fairbanks has a lot to offer you. In town, be sure to visit the wonderful Fairbank Parks. Gruden even has a skate park! If you're looking for something more touristy, check out Seward Military Resort. The ticket and travel information office can help you plan your trip. Of course, you don't want to miss the history and culture either. So be sure to check out the great museums that Fairbanks has to offer.

Housing costs are high and the waiting period for housing at the post office is long. Contact the housing office as soon as you receive the orders. As temporary accommodation is usually booked, it is essential to book a hotel room in advance. Call the Northern Light Inn (Building 3402) at (907) 353-3800 to speak with someone about reservations.

As with all DoD installations, you can choose to live on post or off post. Ft. Wainwright's proximity to several major cities means you can find affordable housing. The best places to live are Fairbanks and North Pole. Both are relatively close and offer a small town feel with larger city facilities.

Fort Wainwright Welcomes New Garrison Commander

North Haven Communities owns and manages privatized military housing. North Haven serves families stationed nearby at the post and Eielson Air Force Base. Neighborhoods are diverse and have community centers, walking and jogging paths, as well as playgrounds. Talk to the housing office for more information.

Unfortunately, there are no DoDEA schools on post. However, Lion children in Wainwright can attend school at Fairbanks North Star Borough School. Talk to the school liaison office for up-to-date information, including enrollment requirements.
