King Area Health Center, and executive director of the Westside Health Center before moving into politics. He chaired Chicago's 29th District on the Chicago City Council from 1979 to 1990.

Davis challenged U.S. Representative Cardiss Collins in the 1984 and 1986 Democratic primaries but lost both races. In 1990, he unsuccessfully challenged incumbent President Edward J. Roswell for the Democratic nomination for Cook County Treasurer. Also in 1990, Davis was elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners where he served from 1990 to 1996 before becoming the House of Representatives.

Davis also ran an unsuccessful campaign against Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley in the 1991 Democratic primary.

After the 1997 Congress, Davis left the Cook County Board of Commissioners. He wanted Illinois Rep. Erlene Collins to nominate his successor to the board, but party leaders instead chose Darla Williams-Burnett, Jesse White's executive aide and wife of Councilman Walter Burnett, Jr. Collins. Democratic Party. mayor to the seat in 1998.

On December 6, 1995, Davis announced his candidacy for the 7th Congressional District, adding his name to already announced Democratic nominees, including Cook County Board of Commissioners Percy Z. Giles, Bobby L. Steele, Councilman Ed Smith, and a councilor. Dorothy Tillman.

Five more Democratic candidates later ran: S. Mdhall, Joan Sullivan, J. Winbush, Anthony Travis, and Joan Powell, making it the largest field of U.S. congressional candidates in Illinois in 1996.

In early January 1996, the FBI released Operation Silver Shovel, which was investigating Councilman Giles.

It's unclear what Operation Silver Shovel could have done to undermine Giles's chances for re-election, as he was already trailing just 3 percent of likely Democratic Party voters in the mid-December poll, compared to Davis' 33 percent, Smith's 8 percent, Tillman's 7 percent. . . and Steele by 6%.

But Giles had the support of Mayor Richard M. Daly and other well-known figures in the area, some of whom continued to support during the controversy.

On March 10, 1996, during a radio debate hosted by WMAQ-AM, Tillman and Smith asked Davis to withdraw his support for former director candidate Wallace "Gator" Bradley.

"Why do you keep teasing me with this question?" Davis replied. “Are you having problems with something? You won't hear me say that I hate Gator Bradley... I'm not in the business of humiliating people. The good God said that he hates sin, but not sinners. I don't hate Gator Bradley. I don't agree with people who commit crimes and use drugs, but you can't make me say that I hate Gator Bradley.

Davis never disavowed Bradley's candidacy during the campaign and, after winning the primary, stated that Bradley's candidacy played no part in the outcome, despite Bradley's claims to the contrary.

During the campaign, Tillman pointed to Davis' comments in the August 1970 issue of Ebony magazine: "A white woman often gives a black man certain kinds of confessions that a black woman often doesn't."

This was helped by the New Party's celebration of being "the first member of the New Party to be elected to the U.S. Congress."

Although the state of Illinois did not allow a merger vote, the New Party supported it as a means of promoting itself and the agde, as well as spreading New Party ideology to the Democratic Party.

In the March 20 Democratic primary, Davis received more votes than the two closest candidates, Tillman and Smith, combined.

Davis told Christian Chalge that Moon declaring himself the Messiah "was like a baseball team owner telling team members 'we're the greatest team on earth'" before a game. Davis said the peace awards were for "recognizing people for contributing to peace". Of course, the highest promoter gets the highest recognition, and the highest promoter is Reverd Moon, so I come with more than the certificates and plaques other people get."

Other lawmakers present were Rep. Mark Dayton, Rep. Roscoe Bartlett and Elijah Cummings, and former Rep. Walter Fontroy. Key organizers of the event included George Augustus Stallings, Jr., a former Catholic priest who was married to Moon, and Michael Jkins, then president of the Unification Church of the United States.
