Best 327 Revolver - .32 caliber revolvers don't get much attention these days. Some you may not have heard of. But today we're going to fix that, because as far as muzzleloading guns go, the .32 can't be beat. In part 10 of our pocket pistol series, we look at the .32 Short, .32 Long, .32 H&R Magnum, and .327 Federal Magnum.
If you own a muzzleloader, chances are it's chambered in .38 Special. Revolvers may not be as popular as they once were, but the small, lightweight .38 Special nosegun is still one of the best-selling concealed carry pistols on the market. I love the .38 Special. It's a great circle. But it's not the best caliber for a hollow nose. That title goes to the humble .32.

I should be more specific as many .32 rifle cartridges have been fired over the years. The .32s I'm thinking of are not single cartridges, but four cartridges: .32 Short, .32 Long, .32 H&R Magnum, and .327 Federal Magnum.
Mm Revolvers That Are Perfect For Self Defense
The .32 S&W Short, also known as the .32 S&W, was produced in 1878 as a black powder cartridge for concealed carry. Today, we'd consider it underpowered, even by pocket pistol standards. But before smokeless gunpowder and 20th century metallurgy, you couldn't expect much from a pocket-sized gun, and the .32 Short was about as good as it got in the small-caliber era.
In 1896, the .32 Short case was lengthened slightly to create the .32 Smith & Wesson Long. This cartridge was used in the original Smith & Wesson pistol and is the basic design on which Smith guns are based to this day. Colt also made a gun for this cartridge, but they called it the .32 Colt New Police.
The .32 Long is slightly more powerful than the .32 Short, but still not as powerful. It is unusually accurate for a handgun cartridge, and some small game hunters use it well with pellet cartridges or handloads. The factory .32 long bullet is slightly lighter than other .32 caliber rifles, due to its popularity in international competitive bull shooting.
The .32 Long was quite popular in the early 1900s, but fell out of favor when the .38 Special became America's favorite revolver cartridge. By the 1980s, it was becoming obscure. But that didn't stop gun manufacturer Harrington and Richardson from trying to revive the .32. In 1984, H&R partnered with Federal to release the .32 H&R Magnum.

Based on the elongated .32 Long case, the .32 H&R Magnum is capable of higher velocities. Ballistically, it is often compared to the standard pressure .38 Special. Harrington and Richardson went out of business a few years after the introduction of the .32 Magnum, but several other companies used their own cartridges during that time. Improved ballistics made small-bore guns that could hold six .32 Magnums, with only five rounds in the .38 or .357, becoming very attractive.
The new .32 had limited success but never really caught on as interest in revolvers generally waned. In the early 2000s, few new revolvers were chambered in .32 H&R Magnum.
But the box had a very enthusiastic following, especially among handloaders. They noted that the SAAMI specifications for the .32 H&R Magnum were quite conservative and did not use the full capacity of the cartridge. This eventually led to another attempt to revive the .32, this time in 2008 when Ruger and Federal introduced the .327 Federal Magnum. The cartridge case was lengthened again, and the new cartridge capacity allowed for some truly impressive ballistics from the .32 caliber cartridge, even with a short gun.
However, ten years after the introduction of the .327 Federal Magnum, only modest success can be said. Ruger is the true champion of this caliber. They offered several chambered guns including the small body SP101 and LCR, the 7 shot GP100 and some of their action models. Smith & Wesson, Taurus, and Charter Arms also produced the .327 Magnum at one time, but they have all been discontinued for some time.
Is The .357 Magnum The Best Option For Personal Defense?
Along with several lever action rifles from Henry Repeating Arms, .327 Rugers are the only .32 caliber rifles currently in widespread use in the United States. Ammunition support is minimal and few loads are produced in the magnum caliber industry.
That's a real shame, because together these four .32 cartridges offer incredible versatility. As you can imagine from their shared history, the .32 has what the tech world calls backwards compatibility. A .32 long gun can also fire a .32 short. The .32 Magnum can also shoot .32 shorts or long pants, and the .327 Magnum will safely fit all four. So the .327 gives you the most flexibility, but the .32 Magnum offers some advantages over the ubiquitous .38 Special.
In fact, if we ignore the lack of manufacturing support and availability for a moment, the .32 cartridges are better suited for small guns than any other caliber. Not only does the .32s squeeze more rounds into the cylinder than the .38 or .357, the .32s shoots much better, especially in lightweight models.
In my opinion, the .32 Magnum Smith & Wesson Airweight and AirLite J-frames of the late 90s and early 2000s were the best .32s ever. This is the model 332 Ti. It features an aluminum frame and a titanium alloy cylinder that weighs just 11.5 ounces unloaded. It weighs about the same as the Model 442 PD (.38 Special) or the Model 43C (.22 LR). .38 is quite tricky to shoot, even with standard pressure cartridges. The 43C is a great shooter except for the heavier trigger with the mag gun. With the 332 I can load .32 shorts and the recoil is close to .22 LR. Shooting the more common .32 Long is equivalent to the mild recoil of a .22 Magnum, and even when I've loaded a full .32 Magnum self-defense load, it's still a more consistent firearm than the .38 found in almost everyone. factory. you will find the load.
Reasons Why The .357 Magnum Is The Best All Round Handgun Cartridge
It's not just about convenience. As I've mentioned several times before in my pocket pistol series, less recoil almost always leads to a better shooting position. In a self-defense situation, a good shot beats good ballistics. With small pistols we often have to choose between the two, but the .32 can offer a great balance of low recoil and good ballistics.
Felt recoil is always difficult to judge, but I'll do my best to share the results of practice shooting with eight types of ammunition. I used two nearly identical 17oz Ruger LCRs. One is chambered in .357 Magnum and the other in .327 Magnum.
I chose a 5x5 drill to evaluate the effect of rotation. Basically, the goal of this drill is to fire five shots in a five-inch circle at five yards in five seconds, starting from cover or a low ready position. But in this exercise, the time to the first shot was not important - I was only interested in how quickly I could turn the sight and make the next shot. So I tried the drill four times for each load and recorded the time between the first and last pull of each attempt. Here are the average times of the two fastest clean shavers for each load:
Keep in mind that this is not a complete quantitative representation of felt recoil from these loads, but it should give you a basic idea of how they compare. For example, .32 Long and .32 Magnum are both light recoil bags, but in reality felt recoil can vary slightly more than these numbers. The .38 Fiocchi Wadcutter is the lightest recoiling .38 commercial specialty load, and I still drill it longer than the .32 Magnum.
Best Self Defense Handguns For Hunters Of 2022
The .327 American Eagle 85 grain soft point is actually considered a low recoil load for a .327, but it's still quite a lot. I think it would be great for a steel gun like the SP101, but not my favorite load for the LCR. I shot the .38 Special +P Gold Dot much longer than the 85-grain .327, but felt that the recoil was actually pretty similar between the two.
